The 25 Best Online Medical Coding Programs in 2026

Medical coding is one of the few health careers that genuinely trains well online, because the work itself is reading records at a screen rather than touching a patient. 603 of the 978 institutions awarding a coding or billing credential offer undergraduate programs you can finish entirely at a distance, which is about 62% of the field.

We scored the 471 online medical coding programs that publish a tuition figure, using the same evidence as our national ranking with one change: online availability is not a scoring factor here, because every program on this list has it.

How we decided a program counts as online. IPEDS records distance education for the institution, not for the individual program, so this list is colleges that offer undergraduate programs completable entirely online and award a coding or billing credential. Confirm with the college that the coding award itself runs online before you enrol.

Why it ranks among online programs

Santa Barbara City College ranks #1 among programs a student can complete online, and is based in Santa Barbara, CA. One exam is named outright on the program page: CCA. The $1,234 figure is the in-district rate. Public colleges often charge more to online students from outside the state, so check which rate applies to you before comparing it with anything else here. The practicum host may require a background check, health check and drug screen at the student’s own expense, which is worth budgeting for. Delivery is completely online.

Why it ranks among online programs

Phoenix College ranks #2 among programs a student can complete online, and is based in Phoenix, AZ. It carries AHIMA Professional Certificate Approval Program approval, which is also what makes its graduates eligible to sit AHIMA's coding exams. The Medical Billing and Coding: Physician-Based, Certificate of Completion runs 36 credits. The $2,358 figure is the in-district rate. Public colleges often charge more to online students from outside the state, so check which rate applies to you before comparing it with anything else here. Mohave Community College ranks #23 among programs a student can complete online, and is based in Kingman, AZ. At $2,136 a year in district, it is about 34% below the median of $3,227 across the online programs on this list. The $2,136 figure is the in-district rate. Public colleges often charge more to online students from outside the state, so check which rate applies to you before comparing it with anything else here. No practicum is on record, which for an online student means the experience an employer asks about is yours to arrange. No independent program review is on record for this one, which is the normal position in medical coding rather than a mark against it.

Why it ranks among online programs

Johnson County Community College ranks #24 among programs a student can complete online, and is based in Overland Park, KS. At $2,328 a year in district, it is about 28% below the median of $3,227 across the online programs on this list. Nothing independent has reviewed this specific program, which describes almost every coding program in the country rather than this one in particular. Distance study is on offer at the college, though the federal record does not say whether the coding certificate itself is delivered that way. It is one of 25 programs on this online list, of which 18 carry AHIMA approval.

Why it ranks among online programs

Pensacola State College ranks #25 among programs a student can complete online, and is based in Pensacola, FL. At $2,348 a year in district, it is about 27% below the median of $3,227 across the online programs on this list. There is no program-level review on record here. That is unremarkable in this field, where only 22 programs nationally carry one. Distance study is on offer at the college, though the federal record does not say whether the coding certificate itself is delivered that way. It is one of 25 programs on this online list, of which 18 carry AHIMA approval.

    How this is scored

Two programs we know run online are missing from this list. Berkshire Community College and SUNY Westchester Community College both state on their own pages that their coding programs run online, but IPEDS does not flag their institutions for distance education, so they cannot be scored here. Both appear on the national ranking. Treat their absence as a gap in the federal flag rather than in the programs.

How much does an online medical coding program cost?

An online medical coding program costs $1,146 to $10,110 a year in tuition among the programs ranked here, and the median across all 480 online medical coding programs we could price is $4,751 a year. A quarter charge under $3,510 and a quarter over $6,450. Figures are published tuition and fees reported to IPEDS for 2023.

Online study does not usually cost less than campus study at the same college, and at some it costs more, because distance-education fees replace the campus ones. What it does save is the commute and the need to fit a timetable, which is the real reason most people choose it. Budget the certification exam separately: the AAPC CPC is $425 for one attempt or $499 for two, plus $164 student membership.

Are online medical coding programs accredited?

Online medical coding programs carry the same accreditation picture as campus programs, which is to say most hold only their college's institutional accreditation. 18 of the 603 online institutions in our data hold AHIMA PCAP approval, which is the only independent program-level review this field has and is also a pathway to the AHIMA coding exams.

No medical coding program in the United States currently holds CAHIIM accreditation, online or on campus. We enumerated the entire CAHIIM directory to check. The full explanation of the four different markers that all get called accreditation is on what "accredited" actually means.

How do online medical coding programs handle the practicum?

Online medical coding programs handle the practicum in one of three ways, and it is the single thing most worth checking before you enrol. 13 of the 25 programs ranked here have one on record.

  1. A virtual practicum on real records. Shoreline has students code 50 to 100 real patient health records without leaving home, which is the cleanest answer to the problem.
  2. A placement you attend. Pueblo runs everything online except the internship. That is not a flaw, but it means you need a site within reach.
  3. No practicum at all. Cheaper and faster, and it leaves you answering the experience question on your own.

This matters beyond the coursework. Passing the AAPC CPC exam without documented experience gives you the CPC-A apprentice designation, and supervised practice is one of the routes to removing it.

Will employers hire you with an online medical coding certificate?

Employers hire you on the certification rather than on whether your medical coding program was online. A CPC or a CCA is the same credential whichever way you studied it, and nothing on the certificate says "online". Coding is also among the most credible fields to study at a distance, because the job itself is reading records at a screen.

What employers do ask about is experience, which is where an online program with a practicum separates itself. Be realistic about remote work as well: remote coding is common for experienced coders and uncommon at entry level, so an online program is a way to study from home rather than a promise of working from home.

Which states have the most online medical coding programs?

The states with the most online medical coding programs are FL, CA, TX, though this matters far less than it does for campus study. Online programs at public colleges usually charge out-of-state students more, so the state a program sits in still affects your price even when you never visit it.

Online medical coding programs run in 50 states in total, so wherever you are there is almost certainly an in-state option worth pricing against the list above.

How are these online medical coding programs ranked?

These online medical coding programs are ranked on four factors totalling 100 points, applied identically to every program. It is the same model as our national methodology, version 1.2, with one deliberate change.

  • Independent review, 40 points. AHIMA PCAP approval, the only program-level review in this field.
  • Published tuition, 28 points. Scored against every online program we could price.
  • Track record, 22 points. Whether the program conferred awards in each of the last three years.
  • Credential fit, 10 points. Whether the college offers the certificate this field hires on, and the associate degree beyond it.

Online availability is worth 12 points on the national ranking and nothing here, because every program on this list qualifies for it. A factor that gives every program the same score separates nobody, and our methodology says to drop such a factor rather than carry it.

What does this online ranking not tell you?

This online medical coding ranking does not tell you whether a specific coding award runs online, because IPEDS records distance education for the institution rather than for the program. That is why two programs we know run online are missing, and why you should confirm the award itself with the college.

It also excludes the private online training providers, Penn Foster and the rest, which are absent from federal data entirely and which we cover separately in programs outside the federal data. And it does not score exam preparation, for the reasons set out on the national ranking, though every card shows it where we could read it.
