The award, the format, your state, your goal, what matters most and anything else you'd like us to weigh.
We Compare 514 Programs
The finder keeps the programs that meet your answers, then reads what we know about each against what you told us.
You Get Your Matches
Up to five programs, each with a match percentage, the facts behind it and a link to its card on our rankings.
What Our Medical Coding Program Finder Compares
The Award You Earn
507 programs confer a certificate, 66 an associate degree, and 59 both, so you can stop after the certificate or keep going.
How You Take Classes

Where You Live

The Exam You Want
15 programs name an exam on their own page: 6 the CPC, 11 the CCA or CCS and 1 a billing exam.
AHIMA Approval
21 programs hold AHIMA PCAP approval, the strongest program-level marker in the field. Pick it in question five to move them up.
What It Costs

Rather browse on your own? Every program in the finder has a card in our rankings. Start with the top 25 medical coding programs, the best online programs or programs in your state.
Which Medical Coding Program Fits Your Goal?
Pass the CPC Exam
The CPC is the AAPC's core coding credential. 6 programs in our finder name it on their own page. Our CPC guide covers the exam, and the CPC vs. CCS comparison helps you pick between the two.
Pass the CCA or CCS Exam
The CCA and CCS come from AHIMA. 11 programs name one of them, and 21 hold AHIMA PCAP approval. Read the CCS guide and the accreditation explainer to see what that approval means.
Billing and Revenue Cycle Work
Billing leans on different exams, such as the CBCS or CPB. One program names one. Many coding programs still cover claims and insurance, so check each card's program page for the course list before you apply.
Moving Into Health Information Management
The RHIT exam is for graduates of a health information associate degree, and 2 programs name it. 66 programs in the finder confer an associate degree. Our guide to moving from coding to an HIM degree maps the steps.
Why the Finder Sometimes Shows Close Matches
Three firm answers can leave very few programs, especially in states with only a handful of colleges awarding coding credentials.
When fewer than five programs fit every answer, the finder lists those first, then fills the rest with close matches. Each one misses exactly one of your answers, and its card names it. Close matches in your own state come before any that would mean moving.
Medical Coding Program Finder FAQ
How Does the Medical Coding Program Finder Work?
You answer six questions: the award you want, how you want to take classes, where you live, your goal, what matters most and anything else we should know. The finder keeps the programs among our 514 that meet your answers, reads what we know about each one against what you told us, and shows you up to five.
Will the Finder Tell Me Which Exam a Program Prepares For?
Only when the program's own page names it. 15 of our 514 programs name an exam we could read, and a match card lists those exams. A program with nothing listed has not published one, which is worth asking its admissions office about. Our certification guides explain what each exam covers.
Why Did I Get Programs Outside My State?
When fewer than five programs fit every answer, the finder adds close matches. Each one misses exactly one answer, and its card says which. Programs in your own state come before any that would mean moving, so a state with few schools still gets you a useful list.
How Is My Match Percentage Worked Out?
Your match percentage shows how closely a program fits what you told us, from its published facts (awards, delivery, exams, approval and tuition). It compares programs for you. It is not a grade of the school, and our ranking methodology explains how the scores on each program card are built.
Do Schools Pay to Appear in My Matches?
No. The sponsored listing at the top of your results is labeled and comes from schools that pay to appear there. Your matches below it come from our own data, and no school can pay to change them.
Do I Need an Account or to Share My Contact Details?
No. The finder never asks for your name, email or phone number, and you don't need to sign up. Please leave contact details out of the optional text boxes.
Can I Run the Finder Again?
Yes. Tap "Start Over" on your results and change any answer. Switching between a certificate and an associate degree, or between campus and online, is the quickest way to see how your options shift.
About 306 of our programs are certificates of a year or less, and 119 confer 25 or more credentials a year. Programs are scored the same way on every list. Read the methodology for the details.
