What "Accredited" Actually Means on a Medical Coding Program

Four different markers get sold as accreditation and only one of them reviews the coding program itself. We counted both directories rather than describing them. A complete read of all 431 records in the CAHIIM directory found 0 medical coding programs: the category exists and nothing holds it.

That makes AHIMA PCAP approval, held by 22 programs nationally, the strongest program-level marker actually available. Most schools hold institutional accreditation instead, which is real and is what financial aid depends on, but it describes the college rather than the coding program. Conflating the two is the most common mistake made about this field.

How We Score Every Program

Program data comes from IPEDS completions, directory, institutional characteristics and both tuition files via the Urban Institute API. Wages come from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release, read at the occupation each role actually belongs to. Accreditation comes from the CAHIIM and AHIMA PCAP directories directly. Where a school publishes nothing, the page says so rather than estimating.
