Medical coding programs outside the federal data
Search for a medical coding program and a good share of the results will be private training providers rather than colleges. Penn Foster, Ashworth, the Andrews School, U.S. Career Institute, MedCerts. Our Top 25 does not include any of them, and that needs explaining, because it is a limit of the data rather than a verdict on the providers.
The ranking is built from IPEDS, the federal system that colleges report to. We checked all 6,163 institutions in the 2023 IPEDS directory by name. None of these providers appear in it. They are not colleges, so there is no federal completion data, no reported tuition, and nothing to score them against the 978 colleges on equal terms.
What actually differs
Three things, and only the second is likely to change your decision on its own.
- No independent outcome data. Colleges report completions every year whether they like it or not. These providers publish their own numbers or none, so there is nothing to check them against.
- No federal financial aid. Because they do not participate in Title IV, FAFSA, Pell grants and federal student loans do not apply. Some accept workforce funding through WIOA or VA education benefits instead, which is worth asking about. For a student who qualifies for a Pell grant, a community college certificate can end up costing less than a cheaper-looking private program.
- No AHIMA PCAP approval. All 22 PCAP-approved programs in the country are colleges, so none of these carry the one independent program review this field has.
Where they compare well
They are often cheaper, they start when you are ready rather than at the start of a term, and several of them include the certification exam in the price. That last one is easy to undervalue. The CPC exam alone is $425 for a single attempt or $499 for two, and AAPC membership adds $164 at the student rate. A program that bundles a voucher is worth several hundred dollars more than its sticker price suggests, so compare what is inside the price rather than the price.

Read off each provider's own page on August 13, 2026. Pricing in this market is promotional and several pages carried a countdown discount when we looked, so treat these as what was advertised that day rather than a quote. None of these providers participates in federal student aid.
Accreditation, where it exists. Penn Foster College is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), an institutional accreditor recognised by the U.S. Department of Education. For the others we could not confirm an institutional accreditor, which is common for private training providers and is not in itself a mark against the teaching. It does mean credits are unlikely to transfer to a college later.
What we could not verify
We list these because leaving them out would make the page look more complete than it is.
- MedCerts. The site blocks automated requests, so we have not confirmed price, length or exam preparation first hand. The provider states it accepts WIOA workforce funding in some states and VA benefits.
- Career Step. The medical coding program URL did not resolve when we checked, so we cannot confirm what is currently offered.
Questions worth asking any provider
- Which exam does this prepare me for, and is the voucher included?
- If I want the CPC, does the program include something that removes the CPC-A apprentice designation, such as a practicum?
- Do you participate in federal student aid, and if not, do you accept WIOA or VA funding?
- Who accredits you, and will these credits transfer if I later want an associate degree?
- What is the total cost including books, software and the exam?
If federal aid matters to your budget, compare against the college programs in our Top 25 before deciding. If it does not, and you want to start this month rather than in September, these providers are a reasonable route as long as you know which exam you are aiming at.
